Chapter Ten

Lawson

“No! Fuck no!”

“River—” Lawson reached for his brother, but River batted his hands away.

“Fuck no!” River repeated. “I don’t care what that pompous arrogant jerk says—I am not his mate.”

“You don’t have to do anything you don’t want,” Drake said.

Lawson glanced over his shoulder to glare at his mate. That was not a helpful statement.

“What I want to do?” River screamed. “I’m not doing shit!”

Lawson sighed. The intimate breakfast he’d had earlier that morning with Drake seemed like ages ago. Right after breakfast, Anton had returned to talk to Axel and meet River. River, his little brother, who Anton had declared was his mate. Anton, who had insulted everyone within the first fifteen minutes of being there. Anton, who’d looked down at River, scoffed, and told him that he’d need to be cleaned up. Lawson did not like Anton and wouldn’t allow him to be treated like trash.

“When you’re ready you can talk to him and—”

“Fuck that!” River screamed over Drake. “I’m out of here.”

Lawson tried to grab River again, but his brother stomped away.

Drake’s hand came down on his shoulder, stopping Lawson. Lawson glanced up at his mate. Didn’t Drake understand that River was leaving?

The back door slammed and Lawson cringed.

“Let me talk to him,” Drake said.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea. He’ll lash out at you and I don’t want you hurt by anything he says.”

“I won’t be,” Drake said. He pulled Lawson in for a hug. “But I can answer more of his questions. Let him know that this is one hundred percent his decision.”

Lawson peered up at his mate. “Is it, though?”

“His choice?”

“Yeah, can River really say no?”

“Absolutely,” Drake answered firmly.

Lawson relaxed. He didn’t think Drake would lie to him about this. If Drake screwed River over, then he would have to deal with Lawson. Lawson might be small and quiet, but when it came to his brothers, he was a fierce protector.

“I’ll make sure River knows he always has a place here with us,” Drake told him. “He’s my family too.”

“Thank you.” Lawson squeezed Drake tightly before letting him go. “You better hurry if you want to catch River. He’s probably halfway to town.”

Drake winked at him. “Vampire speed.”

Then his mate was gone. Yep, only a blur of movement the Drake was no longer in the kitchen and the door closed behind him.

“It’s going to be okay.”

Lawson squealed as he spun around.

“Sorry.” Bryce held his hands up. “I didn’t mean to scare you.”

“No problem. Guess I’m a little jumpy,” Lawson quickly told the Alpha mate. He leaned against the island in the middle of the kitchen.

“It really is,” Bryce said again, as he stepped inside the kitchen.

Lawson nodded but didn’t say anything. He trusted Drake. It was a good test for his mate. Drake kept saying that River and Sebastian were his family now. It was time that Lawson let someone else take over some of the stress he lived with.

“What are you going to do now?” Bryce asked him as he sat on one of the stools beside him.
